Three Things Challenge #MM536
Today’s three words:
ETHOS•ESKIMO•ENDEAR
The Words We Carry 💜
Every culture has an ethos — a way of seeing the world, shaped by history, family, land, language and tradition.
When I was younger, the word Eskimo appeared everywhere in books, television and school lessons.
It was simply presented as the name for people living in the Arctic.
Years later, I learned that language is not always that simple.
Some words stay with us because they were once common, but understanding grows. We learn that people may have their own names for themselves, their own histories, and their own reasons for preferring one word over another.
And somehow, that doesn’t make language less beautiful.
It makes it more human.
Perhaps one of the things that can truly endear us to one another is the willingness to listen when someone tells us who they are.
Words matter.
Not because we must be afraid of saying the wrong thing, but because names carry identity, memory and belonging.
And sometimes learning a new word is simply another way of saying:
I see you. 💜
