Orange

When I hear the word orange, I don’t have to look very far.
In fact, there’s usually something orange asleep somewhere in my house.
Sometimes on a chair.
Sometimes stretched across something I need.
And apparently…
sometimes curled up inside the food bowl.
With four ginger cats, you could say I’ve accidentally created my own permanent Colour Challenge.
Orange in this house has whiskers.
It purrs.
It sheds hair everywhere.
It occasionally brings home things I definitely didn’t request.
And it has absolutely no understanding of the concept of personal space.
But outside my door, orange becomes something completely different.
There it is on the horizon.
The Fuerteventura sun sinking behind the volcanic landscape, turning the sky soft shades of gold and orange.
I’ve watched sunsets here for years, yet I still stop and look.
Perhaps because no two are ever quite the same.
Some evenings the sky explodes with colour.
Others, the sun simply becomes a glowing orange ball resting on the horizon for a moment before disappearing.
Quiet.
Beautiful.
Gone far too quickly.
And I suppose that’s what I love about colour.
The same orange can be magnificent in the sky…
and completely ridiculous when it’s curled up asleep in a metal bowl.

Orange is warmth.
Orange is fire.
Orange is creativity and energy.
Orange is a Fuerteventura sunset.
And in my house…
orange has four legs, whiskers, and absolutely no respect for where it’s supposed to sleep.
