SOUND — Ecuador! 🎶
Jim probably wasn’t expecting me to travel quite this far from El Cóndor Pasa.
He gave us a condor flying over the mountains…
…and somehow my brain immediately went:
ECUADOR!
Not the quiet sound of wind moving through the Andes.
Not a beautiful pan flute.
Nope.
My mind went straight to Sash! and one of those songs that instantly transports me back to the 1990s.
As a former DJ, there are certain sounds I don’t simply remember — I feel them.
That first beat.
The rhythm building.
The bass coming through the speakers.
And suddenly a memory that has been sleeping for thirty years is wide awake.
That’s the extraordinary thing about sound.
A photograph can remind us of a place.
A scent can remind us of a person.
But music can take us back to an entire moment.
For a few minutes, we’re not remembering the past.
We’re standing right inside it again.
So while the condor may peacefully soar across the Andes…
I’ll apparently be somewhere underneath it with imaginary glow sticks, blasting “Ecuador!” by Sash!
