What’s something you do completely differently from how you were raised?

One thing that immediately comes to mind is dinner time.

Growing up in Norway, I remember my mother having dinner on the table at 4 PM every day.

Not 4:30.

Not whenever somebody happened to get hungry.

Four o’clock meant dinner.

When I had my own family, I never became quite as strict about it. I don’t even make a cooked dinner every single day.

And after moving to the Canary Islands, our eating habits changed even more.

It didn’t take me long to understand why people here often eat their evening meal much later.

It’s too bloody hot!

When the sun is blazing and the temperature is high, the last thing I want to do at four in the afternoon is stand over a hot stove cooking a big meal.

Some days a salad, fresh bread and something simple are more than enough.

Then, after sundown, when the air begins to cool, suddenly eating—or even cooking—a proper meal—feels much more appealing.

Over the years I’ve adapted to the rhythm of island life.

There isn’t necessarily a pot on the stove at four o’clock simply because the clock says it’s dinner time.

We eat when it suits our day, our appetites and, quite often, the temperature outside.

It’s funny how something that seemed completely normal when I was growing up can feel so strange now.

My mother would probably look at the clock at 4 PM and ask:

“Aren’t you making dinner?”

And I’d be standing in Fuerteventura with a piece of bread and a bowl of salad saying:

“Have you SEEN the temperature?”

Different country.
Different climate.
Different rhythm.

And apparently my stomach has become Canarian too.

This made me smile so wide. Your mother’s 4 PM dinner bell versus the Canarian heat—it’s such a perfect example of how life literally reshapes us.

“Have you SEEN the temperature?” is the most honest answer. You didn’t reject your mother’s discipline or her love for routine. You just learned that sometimes the most respectful thing is to adapt. To listen to what your body needs, what your environment is asking of you.

That’s not forgetting how you were raised. That’s honoring it by being intelligent enough to know when to follow a different rhythm.

And I love that you can joke about it now. Your mother would probably eventually understand. Different country. Different climate. Different stomach.

Thank you so much 💜 Your comment made me smile! 😂 You understood exactly what I meant. I still appreciate the routines I grew up with, but moving to the Canary Islands definitely taught me to live by a different rhythm. And believe me, after 15 years here, cooking a big dinner at 4 PM in the middle of summer still sounds like madness! 🤣☀️
