Underside

From below, the octopus was all language—
a hundred mouths learning the shape of the world.
Each suction cup tasted stone, current, shadow, time.

Divers thought it watched them.
They were wrong.

It remembered them.
The pressure of boots.
The hum of boats.
The warmth that didn’t belong in water.

When it curled its arms inward, the sea darkened,
and the cups released their stories—
not ink, but echoes.

Later, far above, a diver surfaced
with unfamiliar memories clinging to his skin:
the pull of tides,
the patience of depths,
and the certainty
that something below now knew his name.
