How do you write what people actually want to read?

If I knew the perfect formula for that, I’d probably be writing this from my private island while someone brought me coffee. 🤣☕🏝️

I don’t think you can ever truly know what everyone wants to read.

And perhaps that’s the first lesson:

Don’t try to write for everyone.

When I started blogging, I didn’t sit down with a marketing strategy and calculate what might attract the most readers.

I wrote because I had something to say.

Sometimes it’s serious.

Sometimes it’s poetry.

Sometimes it’s memories from my life.

Sometimes it’s music, spirituality or something that matters deeply to me.

And sometimes it’s about Bella stealing shoes, Oscar having an inappropriate relationship with black footwear, or my hair experiencing a forty-degree climate crisis. 🤣🤣🤣

That’s life.

It’s not one genre.

Neither am I.

I think people connect with honesty more than perfection.

You can write the most beautifully constructed piece in the world, but if there’s nothing of you inside it, people may read it and forget it five minutes later.

But tell them something real—a memory, an emotion, an embarrassing moment, something that made you laugh or something that changed you—and suddenly someone on the other side of the world might think:

“I know that feeling.”

That’s the magic of writing for me.

I also think you have to enjoy what you’re writing.

Readers can often tell when you’re forcing yourself to produce something simply because you think it’s what they want.

I’d rather write something that makes me laugh, cry, think or remember.

Then I press publish and hope it finds the people it was meant to find.

Some posts will attract lots of readers.

Others won’t.

That’s okay.

Not every story will speak to everyone.

And I don’t want to spend my life chasing algorithms or trying to predict what strangers might click on.

I’d much rather build connections with the people who come back because they recognise my voice.

So how do I write what people actually want to read?

I’m still not sure I do.

I write what I would want to read.

I tell the truth as I see it.

I leave room for humour.

I put a little of myself between the lines.

And apparently, every now and then, I accidentally create an alien conspiracy called Arena 51 and people come back to see what happens next.

🤣👽🛸

Maybe that’s the secret.

Or maybe there isn’t one.
