For dVerse Poetics — Pilgrimage

For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Björn is our host

Today I have the prompt about pilgrimage on dVerse where we try to think about everything else a pilgrimage except the reason to reach a sacred object in the end.

Poetics: Pilgrimage, revisiting your journey

The Road Between Two Skies

For dVerse Poetics — Pilgrimage

I did not leave to find a promised land,
nor seek a shrine beneath a foreign sun.
I carried northern winters in my hands,
and dreams of journeys not yet begun.

The mountains watched me turn away,
their ancient silence folded in my heart.
I knew the roads that led me through their valleys,
but not the woman who would walk beyond them.

Across the sea, the seasons changed their names.
The snow became a memory of white,
the forests gave their place to barren hills,
and unfamiliar stars appeared at night.

I learned that home was not a destination,
nor something waiting at the journey’s end.
It lived within the courage of departure,
the strangers who became familiar friends.

Some roads were paved with unexpected sorrow,
some climbed through darkness without any light.
Yet every morning offered me another
small beginning beneath an open sky.

And sometimes, when the world grows far too loud,
I walk the dusty paths beyond my door,
where mountains rise like old and patient guardians,
and silence teaches me to breathe once more.

I have no sacred shrine to reach tomorrow,
no final destination I must find.
The pilgrim and the pilgrimage are one—
each step revealing what I left behind.

For somewhere between northern snow
and southern stars, I came to understand:

I did not travel all this way
to find a place where I belonged.

I travelled to discover
that I could carry home
within myself.

Great write Maggie 👏 I looked up the Canary Islands on the map after your comments yesterday. I kind of knew where they were, though I thought they were farther out and a bit more northerly. Seeing Morocco on the map also made me want to visit your part of the world. Maybe one day.

This line, ‘The pilgrim and the pilgrimage are one,’ reminds me of Dante, not anything specific, but just in general. I’m only up to canto IV too, so not actually sure how that journey goes yet.

Thank you so much, Shaun! 💜 I love that our conversation sent you looking for the Canary Islands on the map. 😂 We’re actually much closer to the African coast than many people realise — Morocco feels very much like our neighbour across the Atlantic. ( 10 miles )
And I love your Dante connection to “the pilgrim and the pilgrimage are one.” I hadn’t consciously thought of Dante when writing it, but I can see why it took you there — the journey changing the traveller as they move through it.
I shall say absolutely nothing about where Dante’s journey takes him. 🤐😂 You have quite a pilgrimage of your own ahead of you yet!

Cheers Maggie. I’m following the Walking With Dante podcast, along with the associated website and then reading the Hollander translation and annotations. It’s kept my interest so far, though, as mentioned, I’m not far along yet.

That sounds like a wonderful way to read Dante, Shaun. 😊 With the podcast, annotations and translation alongside it, you’re really taking the journey rather than rushing towards the destination — which seems rather fitting after Björn’s pilgrimage prompt! 😂

Take your time. Some journeys are much better when we wander a little along the way

Oh yes… home is not a place really but something within yourself. This resonates with me as well.

Thank you, Björn. 💜 I think it took me many journeys, and several different places I called home, to truly understand that. A place can become part of us, but home is also something we carry within ourselves. Perhaps that has been my longest pilgrimage of all.
