The Unexpected Guest 🎂🐈
The celebration was supposed to be small.
Just a few friends, some cake, and one table reserved in the garden of a little café.
Everything was surprisingly quiet.
Too quiet, perhaps.
Then the cake was delivered.
And so was the guest.
Nobody had invited him.
A large ginger cat appeared from beneath the table and sat beside the birthday cake with the most smug expression I had ever seen.
We assumed he belonged to the café.
The café owner assumed he belonged to us.
The cat clearly assumed everything belonged to him.
“Don’t you dare,” I whispered.
He gave me a gentle blink.
For a moment, I thought we had reached an understanding.
I was wrong.
Someone opened a bottle of sparkling wine.
POP!
The sudden noise sent everyone jumping.
Everyone except the cat.
He calmly stretched out one paw, dipped it straight into the icing, and licked it.
I was surprised.
The birthday girl was horrified.
The cat looked delighted.
Someone called him an unkind little thief.
He responded by taking another lick.
Then he settled beneath the chair as though nothing unusual had happened.
Nobody knew where he came from.
Nobody knew where he went afterwards.
But somewhere in town, I suspect a ginger cat is still telling everyone about the wonderful birthday party humans organised especially for him.
And naturally…
he didn’t bring a present. 🐈🎂🤣
