When the Writers Go Silent

When the Writers Go Silent

When the writers
put down their pens,

the world does not
immediately notice.

The cameras still wait.

The lights still shine.

Empty pages
sit patiently
on desks.

But slowly,

the stories stop.

Characters remain
half-born,

lovers never meet,

mysteries keep
their secrets,

heroes wait forever
for someone
to write them home.

Because words
are work.

Imagination
is work.

The sentence rewritten
twenty times
until it finally breathes—

that is work too.

We sometimes forget

that behind every story
that made us laugh,

every poem
that made us cry,

every line
we carried with us
for years,

there was someone

sitting before
an empty page,

trying to turn
nothing

into something
another human heart
could feel.

So when writers
raise their signs,

perhaps they are not
only asking
to be heard.

Perhaps they are reminding us:

stories have value
because storytellers do.

And when the writers
go silent,

we finally hear

how much noise
their words
were making.

The line about rewriting a sentence twenty times “until it finally breathes” really captures the invisible work behind every finished piece. People forget how much effort goes into making something feel effortless.

Thank you so much my friend💜
That line means a lot to me too. Sometimes the words arrive easily, and other times one sentence gets rewritten over and over until suddenly it feels alive. People see the finished poem, but not all the deleted words, changed lines and crumpled thoughts behind it. Perhaps that invisible work is part of the magic of writing.

Beautifully said, Maggie 💜 “The deleted words, changed lines, and crumpled thoughts” — that’s exactly the part readers never see but that makes the final piece feel so alive. I think you’re right that it’s part of the magic; effortless-looking work is almost never effortless underneath.

Great work, Maggie! I especially like the “sitting before / an empty page / trying to turn / nothing /
into something”. Thanks for writing to my Labor Day prompt!

Thank you so much, Bart! 💜
      I really enjoyed this prompt.

That empty page can sometimes feel like the hardest part of writing — and then somehow a few words appear, one leads to another, and suddenly there is something there that didn’t exist before. Thank you for another inspiring prompt
