Welcome to the Middle Ages — If You Dare

The door had been locked for centuries.
At least, that was what the villagers said.
Nobody remembered who had built it.
Nobody knew what lay behind it.
And, naturally, that meant I had to open it.
The old padlock fell apart surprisingly easily beneath my hand.
Clunk.
“That’s probably not a good sign,” I muttered.
I pulled.
The hinges screamed.
Cold air rushed past me carrying the smell of woodsmoke, horses and something I sincerely hoped wasn’t an open sewer.
I stepped through.
Behind me, the door slammed shut.
Before me stood a village that absolutely should not exist.
Stone cottages.
Market stalls.
Horses pulling wooden carts.
A blacksmith hammering glowing iron.
And a rather suspicious-looking man carrying a sword.
I slowly turned back toward the door.
It was gone.
“Oh, brilliant.”
A woman carrying a basket stopped and stared at my clothes.
“What year is this?” I asked.
She looked at me as though I were the strange one.
I tried another question.
“Do you have coffee?”
Her expression told me everything I needed to know.
Forget plague.
Forget medieval medicine.
Forget being accused of witchcraft.
There was no coffee.
I had officially entered hell. 😂
Somewhere behind me, a bell began ringing.
The man with the sword started walking toward me.
And suddenly I understood why the door had been locked.
Welcome to the Middle Ages.
If you dare.
