Some songs don’t need to be fully understood to be deeply felt.
Today I discovered “El Grito de Taoro” by D.A. Music Group, and it left me speechless.
As someone who has called the Canary Islands home for many years, hearing this tribute to the Guanche people touched something deep inside me.
The song remembers the bravery of the Guanches, the indigenous people of the Canary Islands, who fought to defend their land, their freedom, and their way of life during the Castilian conquest in the 15th century.
It tells the stories of legendary leaders such as Bencomo, his brother Tinguaro, Bentor, Doramas, and Autacuperche—names that have become symbols of courage and resistance throughout Canarian history.
One line especially stayed with me:
“They did not conquer us; they only stopped our heartbeat.”
To me, that isn’t denying history. It’s saying that while kingdoms may have fallen, a people’s spirit, culture, and memory can never truly be defeated.
The imagery throughout the song is breathtaking—volcanoes roaring, cliffs crying out, stones standing against steel, and the wind carrying the voices of ancestors through the mountains.
It isn’t simply a song about war.
It’s a song about identity.
About honouring those who came before us.
About remembering that courage can outlive centuries.
Living here has taught me that these islands are far more than beautiful beaches and sunshine. They hold an ancient history, one that still echoes through the volcanic landscapes, the ravines, and the people who call them home.
Thank you, D.A. Music Group, for creating such a powerful tribute.
If you haven’t heard “El Grito de Taoro”, I highly recommend giving it a listen. Even if you don’t understand every word, you’ll feel its heart.
From one grateful resident of the Canary Islands to the ancestors who loved and defended these islands long before us… thank you for your legacy.
With love, coffee, poetry, and stardust,
