What’s the best way to explore a new city?
For me, the best way to discover a new city is very simple:
Walk.
Not necessarily with a strict itinerary or a list of twenty places I have to see before sunset.
Just walk and take in the atmosphere.
I love wandering through streets I’ve never seen before, looking at the buildings, little shops, cafés and everyday life happening around me.
Sometimes you learn more about a place by sitting with a coffee and watching the world go by than you do from a guidebook.
And if I want to find somewhere good to eat?
I watch the locals.
If a restaurant is filled with local people while the flashy tourist restaurant next door is half empty, I know which door I’m trying first.
The locals usually know where the good food is.
Give me the little family restaurant tucked down a side street, where the menu might require some creative translation and someone’s grandmother is probably responsible for the recipe.
That’s where I want to eat.
I also love old architecture.
Churches, museums, historic buildings, old streets and anything that carries traces of the people who were there before us.
There’s something about walking into an old church and looking at the stonework, paintings, stained glass or tiny architectural details that makes me wonder about all the generations who stood in exactly the same place.
Museums give you another part of the story.
They help explain why a city looks the way it does and how the people who lived there shaped it.
I think that’s what I want when I explore somewhere new.
I don’t only want to see the city.
I want to feel it.
Walk where people walk.
Eat where they eat.
Listen to the sounds.
Notice the architecture.
Get slightly lost.
Because getting slightly lost is sometimes how you find the most interesting places.
Slightly being the important word.
I don’t want to become an international missing-person case because I refused to look at Google Maps.
So give me comfortable shoes, my phone, a little curiosity and somewhere good to stop for coffee.
And don’t rush me.
If I find a beautiful old church, an interesting museum or a tiny café full of locals…
The itinerary has officially been cancelled.
