What’s the most interesting local custom you’ve encountered?

One of the most beautiful traditions I’ve experienced here in the Canary Islands is the Romería.
In Fuerteventura, almost every town has its own Romería on different days throughout the year — a celebration filled with music, devotion, history, and community spirit.
The Romería of Tuineje is especially beautiful.
People dress in traditional Canarian clothing, and the streets come alive with folk music, dancing, decorated carts, animals, laughter, and shared food. The procession honors the town’s patron saint, but it is also deeply about togetherness.
Families walk side by side. Wine and local food are offered freely. Music follows through the streets like a heartbeat from another time.
There is something deeply grounding about it all.
It feels less like a performance and more like memory being kept alive.
The Romerías carry the soul of the Canary Islands —tradition, community, gratitude, and celebration under the open sky.
