HANTAVIRUS
Tenerife Is Not a Dumping Ground
09.05.2026
Tomorrow, the cruise ship carrying passengers connected to the hantavirus situation is expected to dock in Tenerife.
And honestly?
Many of us living in the Canary Islands are angry.
Not because we lack compassion. Not because we do not understand medical emergencies.
But because once again, decisions are being made for the islands — not with the islands.
The Canary Islands are not mainland Spain. We are isolated islands in the Atlantic.
Our healthcare systems are already under pressure.
Our infrastructure struggles.
Many residents still carry deep emotional scars from the years of lockdowns, fear, restrictions, and uncertainty.
So hearing that infected passengers may be transferred through Tenerife naturally creates anxiety.
People are asking very reasonable questions:
- Why could supplies not simply be delivered to the ship?
2. Why could quarantine not happen onboard?
3. Why bring passengers onto an island community that never agreed to carry this responsibility?
4. Why are local authorities saying they were not properly consulted?
These are not irrational fears.
These are questions about safety, transparency, and respect.
And perhaps what hurts the most is the feeling that the Canary Islands are often treated as if we are “far away enough” for mainland authorities to place difficult situations here without fully considering the people who actually live on these islands year-round.
Tourists come and go. But we remain.
We are the ones who live here. Raise families here. Work here. Care for vulnerable relatives here . Our concerns should matter too.
Compassion and caution can exist together. But forcing decisions onto island communities without trust or proper communication only creates more fear, frustration, and division.
The Canary Islands deserve better than this !!!
