The goodbye didn’t sound dramatic.
No slammed doors.
No thunder splitting the sky.
Just a quiet sentence placed gently between us —
like a key set down on a table.
I expected grief to swallow me whole.
I expected collapse.
Instead, something strange happened.
When the door closed,
the air changed.
It felt… wider.
The silence wasn’t empty.
It was spacious.
I realised I had been shrinking to fit a room
that was never built for my shape.
The goodbye wasn’t the loss.
The loss had happened slowly,
in the compromises,
in the swallowed words,
in the way I learned to fold myself smaller each day.
What I said goodbye to that day
was not a person.
It was the version of me
who believed love required disappearance.
And as I walked away,
I felt it —
Not devastation.
Expansion.
Like dawn breaking quietly behind my ribs.
Some endings don’t close doors.
They unlock them.
And sometimes the bravest beginning
is the moment you stop staying.
