Observant

Observant is not loud.

It does not interrupt.
It does not compete for the centre of the room.

It watches.

The slight pause before someone answers.
The way hands tighten when a subject changes.
The difference between what is said
and what is meant.

Being observant is a quiet power.

You see the cracks before they widen.
You sense the shift in air before the storm.
You read between the lines
without needing to underline them.

Some mistake observant for distant.
For detached.
For overly serious.

But it is not coldness.

It is awareness.

To be observant is to respect detail.
To honour nuance.
To understand that truth often hides
in the smallest movements.

Not everything needs reaction.
Sometimes it only needs noticing.

And sometimes,
that is enough.
