The People Between Chapters
Not everyone who enters our lives is meant to stay.
That was a lesson it took me years to understand.
Some people arrive for decades.
Some for a season.
Others appear almost like a brief liaison between one chapter of our lives and the next—a friendship, a conversation, a chance meeting with someone whose name we may eventually forget.
Yet something they said remains.
When I was younger, I thought losing contact with someone meant the relationship had somehow failed.
If we had once been close, surely we were supposed to remain close forever.
Life taught me otherwise.
People move.
Families change.
Priorities shift.
Sometimes there is an argument.
Sometimes there isn’t.
Sometimes two people simply travel in different directions until one day they realise they haven’t spoken for years.
That doesn’t necessarily lessen what they once meant to each other.
A friendship that lasted only a year may have carried you through the exact year when you needed it.
A teacher may have said one sentence you remember for the rest of your life.
A stranger may have shown kindness on a day when you had almost stopped believing there was any left.
Even a short encounter can leave a long echo.
Perhaps we aren’t supposed to measure every relationship by how long it lasts.
Perhaps some people are bridges.
They walk beside us for a little while, help us cross something we couldn’t cross alone, and then continue along another road.
We don’t have to follow them.
And they don’t have to follow us.
We can simply be grateful that, for one small stretch of the journey, our paths met.
Because endings don’t always erase what came before.
Some people stay in our lives.
Others stay in who we became because we knew them.
