Sunday Whirl – Wordle #780

The Monster in the Moonlit Forest
The old villagers warned me never to enter the forest after sunset.
They spoke of a terrible monster that lived deep inside a forgotten cave, a creature that preys upon anyone foolish enough to wander beneath the ancient trees.
Naturally, that only made me curious.
One evening, as the moon began to glow above the mountains, I packed my bag, grabbed my walking stick, and set off to discover the truth.
The wind whispered through the branches, making the leaves spin like tiny dancers beneath the stars.
Somewhere in the distance, an owl called.
I stopped to admire the view.
Then I heard something.
A sneeze.
A very loud sneeze.
Followed by a miserable voice.
“Oh, for goodness’ sake! Not again!”
I followed the sound until I discovered the entrance to a cave, almost completely hidden behind a curtain of ivy.
Inside, a small fire burned beneath a black cauldron.
Something bubbled and hissed.
A strange creature sat beside it, holding a handkerchief against its enormous nose.
Its purple fur was tangled, its horns were crooked, and its eyes looked terribly tired.
“Are you the monster everyone is afraid of?” I asked.
The creature lifted its head.
“Unfortunately.”
“Do you eat people?”
“Good heavens, no! I’m vegetarian!”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Then why does everyone say you hunt travellers?”
The creature sighed.
“Because nobody bothers to filter the truth from the rumours. One person sees me collecting mushrooms, and suddenly I’m a bloodthirsty beast!”
I glanced into the cauldron.
“What are you making?”
“Herbal tea. Every evening, I collect herbs and brews—”
The creature stopped, sneezed violently, and shook its enormous head.
“Oh, bother! I can’t even speak properly tonight! I brew remedies for the woodland animals. Or at least I try. My allergies are dreadful this time of year.”
Another enormous sneeze echoed through the cave.
A startled bat began to fly towards the entrance, apparently deciding it had endured quite enough excitement for one evening.
I couldn’t help laughing.
The creature looked offended.
“You’re not frightened?”
“Should I be?”
“Well, I do have rather impressive teeth.”
“So does my dog, but she’s more interested in stealing socks.”
The monster considered this.
“Does she like biscuits?”
“Very much.”
“Then we would get along splendidly.”
I sat beside the fire while the creature poured two steaming cups of herbal tea.
We talked about the forest, the stars, and the strange things people believe when fear takes over their imagination.
By midnight, I had discovered that the most feared monster in the mountains was actually a lonely herbalist with terrible hay fever.
Before leaving, I promised to return with coffee and chocolate cake.
The creature smiled.
“Do you think the villagers will ever stop being afraid of me?”
“Perhaps,” I replied. “But sometimes people are more frightened of what they don’t understand than of anything truly dangerous.”
As I walked home beneath the moonlight, I realised something.
Not every monster has claws, and not every friendly face has a kind heart.
Sometimes the real monsters are the rumours we spread, the judgments we make, and the fear we allow to grow.
And sometimes, the creature hiding in the darkest cave is simply waiting for someone to sit down, share a cup of tea, and listen.
Although next time, I’m definitely bringing coffee.
Herbal tea is lovely, but there are limits to my adventures!
