What’s one piece of travel advice you always follow?

My number one rule when travelling is simple:

Always check the traffic news and weather forecast before setting off!

I like to know whether any roads are closed, if there have been accidents or if there are other problems that might affect my journey.

Living on Fuerteventura, checking the weather is just as important.

You might look outside and see a perfectly lovely morning, only for the weather to decide it has other plans.

One minute, there’s sunshine.

The next, the wind picks up, the sky turns brown with calima, or dark clouds announce that a thunderstorm is on its way.

And when we get heavy rain here on the islands, some roads can become dangerous or even impassable because of flooding.

I’ve experienced enough unusual weather on Fuerteventura to know that Mother Nature doesn’t always follow the forecast!

Then there’s the calima.

Ah yes, our famous Saharan dust!

Sometimes visibility becomes so poor that you can barely see the mountains, even though you know they’re still there.

And if the weather isn’t causing problems, there’s always the possibility of roadworks, diversions or unexpected closures.

That’s why I prefer to check before leaving home rather than discover halfway through the journey that my planned route is unavailable.

Of course, checking the forecast doesn’t guarantee that everything will go according to plan.

This is Fuerteventura, after all.

Mother Nature occasionally seems to enjoy improvising!

But at least I can prepare, allow extra time or decide whether the journey can wait.

And there’s one more thing I never forget when travelling.

Coffee!

Because if I’m going to encounter a traffic jam, an unexpected diversion or another surprise from the weather gods, I’d much rather face it with a decent cup of coffee nearby.

My travel philosophy?

Check the roads, check the skies, and never underestimate the weather on the Canary Islands.

And if the aliens from Arena 51 decide to close the road?

Well, they’d better provide an alternative route! 👽🤣
