For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Frank is our host.

Welcome, Poets, to another eerie edition of Haibun Monday, where we write in that hybrid form of poetic prose and haiku. Frank Tassone, here, your host for a choice edition: let’s commemorate either the Hunter’s Moon or Halloween!

Haibun Monday 10-26-26: Hunter’s Moon/Halloween

When the Moon Calls the Forgotten

A Haibun for dVerse — 26 October 2026

The October night settles over the volcanic mountains of Fuerteventura. Far from the golden forests of my Norwegian childhood, I stand beneath a sky scattered with stars. The air is still, and the familiar scent of dry earth rises around me. Somewhere beyond the terrace, an owl calls into the darkness.

They say the Hunter’s Moon once guided those preparing for winter. Here, autumn arrives without falling leaves or frozen lakes, yet the turning of the seasons is something I feel rather than see.

Halloween approaches, and my thoughts drift towards old stories told beside crackling fires — tales of wandering spirits, ancestral voices and the thin veil separating the living from those who have gone before us.

I do not fear the shadows tonight.

Perhaps they are only memories wearing unfamiliar faces.

Perhaps the wind carries nothing more mysterious than the echoes of those we have loved.

I look towards the moon, wondering how many generations have stood beneath its light, asking the same questions.

And somewhere in the silence, an owl calls again.

Moonlight on black stone
old memories cross the night
an owl guards the stars
