The Ghosts Who Barked at Midnight
This week let’s write a Halloween poem. How could it not be this week’s prompt? But I must insist on new work. No reposting old Halloween poems. The blood should still be warm, screams still echoing off toilet-papered trees.
Monday Poetry Prompt: Halloween
The Ghosts Who Barked at Midnight

Three little ghosts
beneath the moon,
decided Halloween
was coming soon.
They stole three sheets
from someone’s bed,
cut little holes
for each furry head.
They gathered beneath
an ancient tree,
planning their night
of trickery.
One gave a howl,
another a growl,
the third chased a bat
and frightened an owl.
A pumpkin grinned
with fiery eyes,
while shadows danced
beneath dark skies.
They marched through the village,
their tails tucked away,
determined to give
everyone a fright that day.
But something stirred
behind the old gate,
a shadow appeared—
and sealed their fate.
Two glowing eyes,
a terrible sound,
three frightened ghosts
fell flat on the ground.
They trembled and whimpered,
too scared to look back,
when out of the darkness
came a familiar bark.
It was Bella, of course,
with a sock in her mouth,
who had followed their footsteps
all the way south.
She wagged her tail,
then stole a white sheet,
and ran through the darkness
on four little feet.
Now four little ghosts
haunt the street every night,
but nobody runs,
and nobody takes fright.
For everyone knows
when the moon shines bright—
the ghosts only want
a biscuit to bite.
And perhaps…
one more sock
before midnight.
