When the Butterflies Return
What Do You See? — 26 October 2026
Three candles burn against the night,
Their flames embracing fading light.
The roses bow, the hours grow still,
And memories linger on the windowsill.
An ancient clock has ceased to chime,
Yet love survives the hands of time.
A silent skull, a whispered prayer,
A thousand things we cannot share.
Then butterflies emerge from night,
Their fragile wings like souls in flight.
They dance between the flame and rose,
As though they carry what heaven knows.
Perhaps they come from worlds unseen,
To visit places they have been.
A gentle touch, a passing breeze,
A familiar presence among the trees.
For death may close an earthly door,
But memories bloom forevermore.
And when the butterflies return,
Another candle we shall burn.
Not for the darkness, nor the end,
But for the souls we still call friends.
For those we miss, yet hold so near,
Whose love remains throughout the years.
Inspired by Sadje’s What Do You See? challenge and the photograph by Paula Morin.
As Día de los Muertos approaches, a time of remembrance celebrated by some here in the Canary Islands too, this image reminds me that remembering those who have passed need not be only about sorrow. It can also be about gratitude, connection, and the love that remains.
