For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Grace is our host.
Your ChallengeThis week, break the couple.
Write a poem incorporating one of these couplets.
Choose one:
Broken Couplet — disrupt the expected relationship between the two lines.
Split Couplet — experiment with a longer first line and a shorter second line.
Hinged Couplet — let the second line turn, transform, or change the meaning of the first.

October Has Two Faces
October arrives dressed in amber and gold—
here, she wears dust.
The calendar promises cool evenings and rain—
the thermometer laughs.
Somewhere, leaves loosen their grip on the trees—
here, October still drives with the A/C on.
The sun slips behind the mountains at eight—
twenty-seven degrees refuses to call it autumn.
I open the window expecting a cooler breeze—
Sahara walks in.
The year says it is time to slow down—
my life accelerates.
I tell myself change comes gently with seasons—
sometimes it kicks down the door.
There are things I thought I had left behind—
they learned my address.
There are memories I promised not to revisit—
October remembers.
Yet darkness is not always an ending—
sometimes it reveals the stars.
And what looks like a road disappearing ahead—
may simply be asking me to follow.
So let October keep her two faces—
I have learned to carry mine.
