My genie wishes

Dailyprompt-2902
The genie grants you a wish. What is it?

Oh, I’ve been preparing for this question since I was a little girl. 🤣
I’ve played the “What would you wish for if you found a magic lamp?” game in my head more times than I can remember.
And I’m sorry, Genie…
One wish isn’t enough.
I’m going to be greedy.
Or clever.
Let’s call it clever. 🤭
My first wish would be:
Wish Number One:
I want three wishes every year.
Not three wishes now.
Three wishes every year.
See what I did there? 🤣
I’m not wasting a wish asking for unlimited wishes because every genie I’ve ever encountered in stories seems to have read the small print on that one.
So I’m negotiating an annual contract instead.
Three wishes.
Renewed every twelve months.
No rollover required.
Thank you very much.
Now that I’ve secured my future supply, I can use the remaining two wishes for something considerably more important.
Wish Number Two:
Stop all wars and bring peace to our planet.
No more children growing up surrounded by bombs and destruction.
No more families losing the people they love because someone somewhere decided another human being was the enemy.
No more generations inheriting hatred from the ones before them.
Just imagine what humanity could accomplish if all the energy, money and intelligence spent destroying things were used to build instead.
And then…
Wish Number Three:
Enough food for everyone.
Nobody should go to bed hungry while food exists in abundance elsewhere.
Every child fed.
Every family knowing there will be another meal tomorrow.
Not luxury.
Not endless riches.
Simply enough.
And there we are.
My three wishes are gone.
The genie looks at me.
I look at the genie.
“See you next year.”
🤣
Because I’ve already secured the renewal.
And that gives me twelve whole months to decide what the next three wishes should be.
Clean water for everyone?
A safe home for everyone?
Protect the planet?
End cruelty?
Oh dear.
I’m going to need a notebook.
And knowing me, when the genie returns I’ll probably have produced a spreadsheet titled:
GENIE — YEAR TWO: PRIORITIES
But perhaps that’s what I’ve always liked about imagining wishes.
When we’re children, we might begin with castles, money, ponies or magical adventures.
As we grow older, we realise that some of the greatest wishes aren’t things we want for ourselves.
They’re things we wish nobody in this world had to live without.
Although…
I’m still keeping my annual three-wish contract.
I’m generous, not stupid. 🤭
