Behind the Laughter
#missysmadchallenge
He laughed like he wasn’t breaking inside.
The kind of laughter that filled a room, made strangers smile, and turned an ordinary moment into a memory worth keeping.
He was always the one with a joke.
The one who could make everyone laugh when the world felt too heavy.
The one who noticed when someone else was hurting and somehow knew exactly what to say.
Nobody ever thought to ask if he was all right.
After all, he was laughing.
And people who laugh that much must be happy.
Mustn’t they?
But laughter can be a clever disguise.
Sometimes it is easier to make someone else smile than to explain why your own smile has become so difficult to find.
Sometimes the loudest person in the room is simply trying to drown out the noise inside his own head.
And sometimes, when everyone has gone home and the lights are switched off, the silence becomes unbearable.
He would sit alone, remembering the laughter.
The faces.
The jokes.
The way everyone had told him how wonderful it was to see him so happy.
He wished he could have told them.
That some days, getting out of bed felt like climbing a mountain.
That sometimes he laughed because crying would have frightened the people he loved.
That he didn’t need someone to fix everything.
He just needed someone to stay.
Someone who wouldn’t disappear when the jokes stopped.
Someone who could sit beside him in the silence without demanding an explanation.
But tomorrow would come.
And he would put on his familiar smile.
He would tell another joke.
Someone would laugh.
And for a moment, perhaps he would feel a little lighter too.
Because his laughter wasn’t necessarily a lie.
The joy he gave others was real.
The love was real.
The beautiful moments were real.
And so was the pain.
Two truths can live inside the same heart.
Perhaps that is what we sometimes forget when we look at another person.
We see the smile.
We hear the laughter.
We remember the happiness they brought into our lives.
But we cannot always see what they carry when nobody is watching.
So the next time someone makes you laugh, laugh with them.
Enjoy the moment.
But remember to ask how they are doing, too.
And if the smile fades, don’t turn away.
Sometimes the greatest kindness isn’t finding the right words.
It’s being willing to stay when there are no words at all.
Because even the person who makes everyone else laugh deserves someone who notices when the laughter stops.
