Autumn Forgot the Island

This week let’s write a poem with the words autumn, bright and island in it. This is another of those prompts where I randomly choose three words from a list of the top 1000 words in the English language plus a few of my favorites. Post your poems in the comments below.

Autumn Forgot the Island

The calendar says autumn.

The sun says otherwise.

Across the world,
leaves are turning gold,
morning air grows crisp,
and people reach
for woolly jumpers.

But here,
on my little island,
the sky remains bright,
the sea still sparkles,
and the sun refuses
to surrender its summer crown.

The palm trees
have no intention
of changing colour.

The thermometer
hasn’t read the calendar.

And autumn?

Well, autumn
seems to have missed
the ferry.

We know the seasons
have changed
when the clocks
move an hour,

and suddenly
our evenings
grow shorter.

But the heat
stays for another visit,
lingering until
late November
before finally deciding
to pack its bags.

Perhaps that is
the beauty of island life—

the seasons arrive
without much ceremony,

and while the rest
of the world
is falling into autumn,

we are still
sitting beneath
the summer sun,

wondering
whether winter
will remember
to visit at all.

Love the stanza about autumn missing the ferry. I’ve never lived anywhere without noticeable changes season to season. I wonder how my poetry would change.

Thanks for writing to my three-word prompt, Maggie!

Thank you so much, Bart! 💜
I think autumn missed the ferry and decided to take an extended summer holiday!

Having grown up in Norway, where the seasons are very distinct, I do miss the beautiful autumn colours and the first snowfall sometimes. Here in the Canary Islands, the changes are much more subtle. We notice them in the light, the shorter days, and eventually the cooler evenings.

I think your poetry would simply find different things to notice. Instead of falling leaves and snowflakes, perhaps you’d find inspiration in the ocean, the mountains, and the ever-changing light.

Thank you for another lovely prompt!
