The Last Service
The church had been empty for forty years.
At least, that’s what everyone said.
Every Sunday morning, Eleanor walked past and heard the organ playing.
She told neighbours.
They laughed.
She told the council.
They blamed old pipes.
So one Sunday, Eleanor climbed the steps and tried the door.
Unlocked.
Inside, sunlight streamed through dusty windows.
The pews were empty.
The organ played by itself.
Then, halfway down the aisle, she noticed a hymnbook lying open.
Beside it sat a handwritten note.
We wondered when you’d come back.
Eleanor smiled.
She remembered that handwriting.
“Hello, Mum.”
The organ stopped.
