The Last Service

The church had been empty for forty years.

At least, that’s what everyone said.

Every Sunday morning, Eleanor walked past and heard the organ playing.

She told neighbours.

They laughed.

She told the council.

They blamed old pipes.

So one Sunday, Eleanor climbed the steps and tried the door.

Unlocked.

Inside, sunlight streamed through dusty windows.

The pews were empty.

The organ played by itself.

Then, halfway down the aisle, she noticed a hymnbook lying open.

Beside it sat a handwritten note.

We wondered when you’d come back.

Eleanor smiled.

She remembered that handwriting.

“Hello, Mum.”

The organ stopped.

Aw, this is either lovely or terrifying, depending who Mom was, and who ‘we’ are! Very cryptic indeed!

I was thinking lovely… but now you’ve made me suspicious of my own story!
In my head, Mum was someone loving and familiar, but as for who the “we” are… I think I’ll leave that little mystery inside the church.

It’s fortunate that mum’s the patient type!

Very patient indeed! Forty years is a long time to wait for someone to finally take the hint. Perhaps playing the organ every Sunday was her version of saying, “Eleanor, get in here!”

Maggie, these are the kinds of ghost stories I prefer: gentle, caring, healing.

Aww, thank you, Lisa 💜 After last week’s creepy dolls, I thought I’d better give you a gentler ghost this time. 😂 I like to think not every haunting is meant to frighten us. Sometimes perhaps they just want us to know that love is still there.
