Today’s three words:
GIST • GRIP • GRIPE.
Just Give Me the Gist
“I don’t need the whole story,” she said.
“Just give me the gist.”
That should have been simple.
It wasn’t.
Twenty minutes later, the explanation had included three people she had never met, an argument from 2007, someone’s neighbour, a broken washing machine and a cat that apparently had nothing whatsoever to do with the original subject.
She tightened her grip on her coffee mug.
“So… what actually happened?”
“Well, I’m getting to that.”
“You’ve been getting to it for twenty minutes.”
“Context is important.”
She closed her eyes.
Her only gripe had been that nobody could ever answer a simple question with a simple answer.
“Fine. Start again. One sentence.”
There was a long pause.
“Well…”
She raised one finger.
“ONE.”
Another pause.
“They cancelled.”
She stared at them.
“That was it?”
“Yes.”
She took a very slow sip of coffee.
“Wonderful. Now I’d like twenty minutes of my life back.”
The cat looked up from the sofa.
Even he appeared exhausted.
Sometimes the gist really is enough.
