If you could relive one year of your life, which one would it be?
I think I would go back to the summer of 2002 and relive the year that followed.
Not because it was an easy year.
Far from it.
There were difficult things happening in my life at the time, and parts of that period I certainly wouldn’t choose to experience again.
But somewhere amongst all of that, something happened that changed the direction of my life.
I realised I was falling in love with the man who is now my husband.
The funny thing is, he wasn’t some mysterious stranger who suddenly walked into my life.
I already knew him.
We had been friends for years.
He had originally come into my life through my ex-husband, and over time he became someone I trusted. When he saw what was really happening in my marriage and how I was being treated, he distanced himself from that friendship.
But he didn’t walk away from me or my children.
He told me he would always be there for us.
At the time, I don’t think either of us knew quite where life was taking us.
Then came that summer.
Somewhere along the way, friendship began changing into something else.
And I realised:
Oh bloody hell. I’m in love with him. 😂💜
I think that’s why I’d choose that year.
I’d like to experience those little moments again knowing what I know now.
The conversations.
The laughter.
The moment I began looking at an old friend differently.
That strange mixture of fear and excitement when you realise your heart has apparently made a decision before your brain has received the memo. 😂
And I’d love to whisper something to the woman I was back then:
You have no idea where this is going.
Because that man would eventually get down on one knee on Christmas Eve 2003 and ask me to marry him.
We would build a life together.
There would be children, moves, challenges, laughter, tears and chapters neither of us could possibly have imagined back in 2002.
It hasn’t always been an easy road.
But more than two decades later, we’re still travelling it together.
So yes, I’d relive that year.
Not to change it.
Not to erase the difficult parts.
I’d simply like to experience once more that extraordinary moment when a friendship quietly became love.
