Three Things Challenge #MM535

Today’s three words:

DREARY•DIARY•DIPPY

Dear Diary 💜

When I was a young teenager, I kept many a diary.

Their pages held the things I didn’t always know how to say aloud — thoughts, feelings, little pieces of my life, and poem after poem whenever inspiration appeared.

Some were probably terribly dreary.

Teenage hearts are rather good at believing every disappointment is the end of the world.

And I’m quite certain there were some wonderfully dippy entries too — the sort that would make the woman I am today smile, shake her head and think,

Oh, Maggie…

But among all those diaries, there was one book that was different.

An older cousin gave me a beautiful white book trimmed in gold, together with a gold pen.

That became the special one.

I didn’t fill it with everyday thoughts or teenage dramas. I carefully chose the poems I thought were my best and copied them into those pages.

Looking back, I suppose it was my very first poetry collection.

I didn’t know where writing would eventually take me.

I didn’t know that decades later I would still be writing poems, stories and song lyrics.

Back then, I was simply a teenage girl deciding that some of her words were precious enough to deserve a beautiful book and a gold pen.

Perhaps those diaries weren’t merely keeping my memories.

Perhaps they were quietly teaching me to become a writer.

And that little white-and-gold book?

Maybe that was the first time I began to believe that I already was one. 💜

I handwrote a lot of poems and put them in a small photo album for my Mum and Dad’s wedding anniversary one year. I did another with type written pages for Mum (and one for Bro one Christmas) which was returned to me after she died.
    Thanks for joining in Maggie

Mum kept an old exercise book (1970) with my poems in it by her bed. Apparently she’d read one every night.
