For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Mish is our host.

Welcome! Mish here as your host for Haibun Monday where we marry prose and haiku into a poetic form popularized by Japanese poet, Matsuo Basho. With all that is challenging and disheartening in the world these days, I think it is imperative to find sources of happiness, hope and love. At the very least, we can reflect on memories that brought us joy. One event that is sure to rejuvenate our hearts is a wedding. Why is it that when we witness two people joining together, exchanging their vows of commitment, our spirits are lifted? First off, we are escaping the mundane to enter a venue of beautiful sights and sounds. Observing this union reminds us of our own dreams and promises. We are also celebrating in new beginnings which fosters hope. We reconnect with loved ones and become part of a collective, positive energy. Cheers to that!

Haibun Monday: Wedding Bliss

Crowned in the Fjords

We didn’t marry beneath stained glass or walk down a church aisle. We went to a courthouse among the fjords of western Norway, surrounded only by those closest to us. I wore my bunad and, upon my head, a borrowed bridal crown more than 250 years old. I remember thinking of all the brides who had worn it before me, each carrying her own hopes into a new chapter.

Our children were part of the ceremony too. My oldest son stood beside my husband as his best man, while my sister was my maid of honour. Afterwards, there was no grand hotel reception. We had rented several large camping cabins, ordered food from a catering service, and celebrated together as a family.

Looking back, I wouldn’t exchange it for something grander.

The crown may have carried centuries of history, but the promise beneath it belonged only to us.

Haiku

ancient bridal crown
fjords hold our quiet promise—
two lives become one

💜

My bunad carried its own history. My mother sewed it for me, while I made the belt and chest piece myself.

The traditional silver jewellery, called sølje, had been collected over the years; my first pieces were given to me for my confirmation.

So when I dressed for my wedding, I wasn’t simply putting on a traditional Norwegian costume. I was wearing pieces of family, tradition and my own history.

How wonderful to be crowned and married in the fjords, Maggie, and how amazing that the crown was more than 250 years old! That’s a lot of brides who have worn it. I love that you celebrated together as a family.

I heard the story before, and I find it so nice to have those crowns you may borrow… bunad is also such a nice thing (It is quite an expense but you can wear it at so many other times than a wedding)

Yes, i think I wrote about here at dVerse in June.

Yes, the bunad is very expensive. I made the belt and chest part myself.
My mother made the rest of it.

Thank you so much! 💜 We really wanted something small and intimate with our closest family, and looking back, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. The old bridal crown made it extra special for me—I couldn’t help thinking about all the brides who had worn it during those 250+ years before me. I’m also so happy you’ve been enjoying my writing and music lately. That truly means a lot. 🥰

A beautiful celebration and haibun. I was not familiar with a “bunad” until now. How very special to wear a crown carrying so much history, memories and love. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much, Mish! 💜 I didn’t even think about the fact that “bunad” might be unfamiliar outside Norway. It’s our traditional Norwegian folk costume, and different regions have their own designs and traditions. Mine was especially meaningful to wear for our wedding, and having that 250-year-old bridal crown with it made me think of all the brides and stories it had witnessed before mine.

It was pretty cool Maggie celebrated away from the grandeur of hotels which were just ordinary and could be experienced at any other times. To top it all a 250 yr crown! How nice!

Thank you so much, Hank! 💜 That was exactly what we wanted—something small, relaxed and surrounded by our closest family rather than a grand hotel celebration. The cabins in the fjords were perfect for us. And yes, the 250-year-old bridal crown was definitely the most extraordinary part! 👑 I felt very honoured to be allowed to wear something that had been part of so many brides’ stories before mine. Thank you for reading.

All brides need something beautiful to wear and your crown has special meaning!

I really like your new song, Maggie! Have you listened to Skillet? A similar style, I think.

Thank you so much, Lynn! 💜 The crown really was incredibly special, especially knowing how much history it carried. And yes, I do listen to Skillet! 😄 “Awake and Alive” is one of my favourites. I hadn’t actually thought about the similarity in style, so you’ve given me something to think about. Thank you for listening to my song too — that means a lot. 🎶💜

Thank you so much, Sean. 💜 I’m especially happy that this connected with your own western Norwegian heritage. I grew up on the west coast of Norway, so the fjords, the bunad traditions and that sense of family history are very close to my heart. Our wedding was small and simple, but looking back, that was exactly what made it so special. Thank you for sharing that connection with me. 🇳🇴

Thank you so much, Selma. 💜 I love your words, “meant to last.” We will actually celebrate 24 years together this September, so perhaps all that tradition brought us a little extra luck. 😊 The crown and the beautiful fjord surroundings made the day very special, but having our closest family there was what mattered most.
