Fandango’s Story Starter #260

The Fire Within
Some people thought he was too intense for his own good.
They said it with a smile, as though it were a harmless personality flaw.
He felt too much.
He noticed what others overlooked.
He cried at music, argued for justice, stayed up all night helping strangers, and refused to look away when something was wrong.
“Learn to let things go,” they told him.
But he couldn’t.
Not because he was weak.
Because compassion had never learned the language of indifference.
One autumn evening, a bridge collapsed during a storm. While people stood frozen, filming with their phones, he ran toward the wreckage. He wasn’t the strongest person there, nor the bravest.
He was simply the one who couldn’t ignore another human being calling for help.
Later, wrapped in a blanket beside the ambulance, someone asked why he had risked his life.
He looked at the dark river and shrugged.
“If caring is too intense,” he whispered, “I hope I never become comfortable.”
Perhaps the world has never needed fewer intense people.
Perhaps it has needed more hearts willing to burn with kindness.
