For dVerse Poets Pub – Dora here from Dreams from a Pilgrimage to invite you to join us in writing for Prosery Monday. Prosery is unique to dVerse in that we incorporate a given line of poetry without any alteration, except in punctuation, into our 144 words (or less) of prose.

Today’s topic :

I’ve chosen the following line from “King of the River” for you to use in your prose:. . . and the iridescent image swims through a mirror that flows. ”Stanley Kunitz (The Atlantic, 1970)

Prosery—Luminous Accountings

Between Two Shores

At dusk, I walked where the Atlantic folded itself onto the shore. The tide had left shallow pools between the volcanic rocks, each holding a piece of the darkening sky.

I leaned closer.

For a moment, the reflection was not mine.

A familiar shape shimmered beneath the surface, impossible to hold, yet impossible to dismiss. I did not call out. Some encounters vanish when we demand explanations.

The water trembled beneath the evening wind, and the iridescent image swims through a mirror that flows.

Then it was gone.

Only stars remained, scattered across the pool.

I stood and continued home, strangely comforted.

Perhaps those we have lost do not always return as voices or footsteps.

Sometimes they borrow light, water, and one quiet moment when we are willing to notice.

That line about not calling out because “some encounters vanish when we demand explanations” that’s where your real wisdom lives. You’ve given us something honest: that grief doesn’t always need resolution, sometimes it needs permission to exist quietly in a tidal pool at dusk.

And that ending… that those we’ve lost might return not as apparitions but as borrowed light, as moments we’re finally awake enough to notice. The iridescent image swims perfectly between presence and memory. 💫

Well done. I’m a firm believer that we have so much more that we could “notice” if we would take more time to “be still”.

Gorgeous writing, Maggie! I love the way you set the scene in the opening paragraph, especially ‘the Atlantic folded itself onto the shore’ and the ‘shallow pools between the volcanic rocks, each holding a piece of the darkening sky’. I also love the thought that ‘some encounters vanish when we demand explanations’. I too believe that ‘those we have lost do not always return as voices or footsteps’ and savour quiet moments.

I love the way you folded this into a story, and also concluded with an advice. To be willing to see and to notice is always wise.

Enchanting, Maggie. I love everything about this mysterious encounter, and how you used the Kunitz line to accentuate its non-threatening, beatific character. The ending is out-of-this-world good!

I think it’s true… That sone encounters vanish when we ask for an explanation or something…

I love the line about the quiet moment in which we are willing to notice too…

    that was a great line…
