Every life has layers

She arranged them from largest to smallest, just as her grandmother had taught her.
“Every life has layers,” Grandmother used to say. “What people see is only the outside.”
After the funeral, Anna opened the first figure.
Inside waited another.
Then another.
Memories surfaced with each one—laughter, arguments, secrets, forgiveness.
Finally, she reached the tiniest piece.
It shouldn’t have opened.
But it did.
Inside lay a tightly folded scrap of paper.
Anna unfolded it carefully.
Three words, written in her grandmother’s unmistakable hand:
I’m still here.
Behind her, the empty rocking chair creaked.
Anna smiled.
“I know.”
