What’s a thing you wish schools actually taught?

Sign language.

I’ve thought this since I was very young.

Imagine if every child learned basic sign language at school alongside reading, writing, maths, and other languages.

Later in life, I had the opportunity to actually learn it.

I was working at a school where we had a deaf boy, and learning sign language meant that I could communicate with him in his language rather than expecting him to adapt to mine.

That experience only strengthened something I’d believed for years:

Sign language should be available to everyone.

We teach children foreign languages because communication opens doors between people and cultures. Why shouldn’t we also teach a language that could help remove barriers for deaf and hard-of-hearing people?

Even basic signs could make a difference.

Hello.

Thank you.

Are you okay?

Do you need help?

Small things to one person can mean inclusion to another.

And perhaps if children learned it naturally from an early age, communicating through sign wouldn’t feel unusual at all.

It would simply be another way we humans speak to each other.

Not every voice is heard with our ears. Some are heard with our eyes—and understood with our hearts.

I agree, it would be nice if schools taught sign language as a given!
