Day 28 – Describe the last time you surprised yourself.

The last time I truly surprised myself was when I drove to the west coast of Fuerteventura by myself last month.

I don’t like narrow mountain roads, and to be completely honest, some of the driving on this island can be nerve-racking.

Fuerteventura has one of the highest rates of traffic accidents in the Canary Islands when you consider the size of its population. It’s not just tourists who get into accidents—locals do too—so it’s something I always keep in the back of my mind.

Even knowing all that, I got behind the wheel and made the journey.

When I arrived, I realized I’d been stronger than my fears.

Sometimes courage isn’t about being fearless. It’s about doing something even though you’re scared.

That drive reminded me that I’m capable of more than I often give myself credit for, and that’s a lesson worth remembering.

That moment when you arrive somewhere and realize you were braver than you thought is profound—but what strikes me most is that you didn’t white-knuckle your way through it. You felt the fear the entire drive and did it anyway. That’s the honest kind of courage not the dramatic overcoming of fear, but the quiet decision to let fear ride along while you steer. The fact that you kept reminding yourself of the risks and drove anyway? That’s not bravery masking doubt. That’s choosing yourself over the doubt.

Thank you for your kind words 💜
I have been “spoiled” with my husband that drove everywhere, but that changed three years ago when he got bedridden after his fall.

That shift from being driven everywhere to driving yourself that’s not just practical independence, it’s a profound kind of courage. Three years in and you’re not just managing, you’re achieving and showing up for your life while also being his anchor. That kind of quiet strength is what real achievement looks like. 💜
