For dVerse Poets Pub where Bjőrn is our host.

For this week’s ballad challenge, I’m sharing a song I wrote for my album Beneath the Northern Stars. “Silje, The girl who chose love ” tells the story of the founding mother of the Ice People lineage, inspired by Margit Sandemo’s beloved saga.

Silje-The Girl Who Chose Love

“Silje – The Girl Who Chose Love”

Seventeen and winter broken,
plague had stolen all she knew,
through the streets of grieving Trondheim,
still her stubborn heart beat true.

Cold winds whispered through the alleyways,
hunger walked beside her feet,
yet she stopped beside a small lost child
where sorrow slept upon the street.

Little Sol with frightened silence,
wrapped in grief too young to know,
Silje lifted her from darkness—
"You will never walk alone."

When the world had turned to ashes,
when the night had taken more,
still her heart reached toward the broken—
and opened one more door.

Beyond the city gates came crying,
through the forest dark with fear,
a newborn child left there for dying,
while winter pressed so near.

Others feared what hid in shadows,
called it ghost or cursed despair,
but Silje knelt beside the sorrow—and found a child still there.
"I found you in the dark and night,
so Dag your name shall be…
"And somewhere fate stood waiting quietly,
beneath the frozen trees.

Then came whispers in the twilight,
wolfskin shadow,
amber eyes,
all of Trondheim feared the stranger—
but Silje saw the man inside.

Silje — the girl who chose love,
through the hunger,
through the snow,
when the world gave only sorrow—still she chose a heart to hold.
She chose warmth where fear stood waiting,
chose hope when none remained,
and the girl who had lost everything
taught broken souls to love again.

In the church she painted stories,
hands alive with color and flame,
while beneath her brush a devil formed—
with the face she could not name.

Wolfskin man with hidden kindness,
healing hands the frightened feared,
yet she touched the soul beneath him—
and stayed through every year.

Sol and Dag,
then Liv and Are,
through the valley,
through the years,
at Lindallén she built a haven
stitched together out of tears.

She was never born of magic,
never marked by ancient blood,
only warm-hearted and stubborn—
and impossibly good.

She chose Tengel when fear stood near her,
chose family after loss,
for sometimes love is not a lightning—sometimes love is choosing the cost.

Silje — the girl who chose love,
through the winter,
through the pain,
when the darkness called for silence—
still she taught hearts hope again.
She chose life when death stood waiting,
chose kindness through it all,
and the girl who once had nothing
became the heart that held them all.

Beautifully written and beautifully sung, Maggie, it has the feel of an old ballad. I love the personification in the lines:

‘Cold winds whispered through the alleyways,
    hunger walked beside her feet’

and the way you portrayed the characters, especially:
    ‘Wolfskin man with hidden kindness,
    healing hands the frightened feared,
yet she touched the soul beneath him’.

and ‘She was never born of magic,
    never marked by ancient blood,
    only warm-hearted and stubborn—
    and impossibly good.’
