For dVerse Poets Pub where Kim is our host.

We are to write a list poem with inspiration from ‘The Great Lover’ by Rupert Brooke:

Poetics: The Great Lover

Small Constellations

These I have loved:

The first dark coffee before I become human,
steam curling upward in the quiet kitchen;
bare feet pressed against cool tiles,
then warmer earth beneath the morning sun.

The soft weight of headphones over my ears,
music turning pain into somewhere I can breathe;
Vivaldi filling a room while paint gathers
on my fingers and forgotten hours disappear.

Purple skies above Fuerteventura,
the Moon polishing the Atlantic silver,
planets wandering between constellations,
and darkness deep enough to reveal everything.

The sudden hush before an falcon appears,
ravens calling from a distant wall,
a feather found where no feather should be,
and butterflies arriving like whispered answers.

Bella’s brindle body curled close,
the cats claiming every chair and windowsill,
the careful scratch of Oscar crossing the ground,
small lives trusting that I will remember them.

Fresh sheets smoothed across a tired bed,
pillows stacked high on difficult nights,
the cool kindness of water,
and eucalyptus opening the air.

Old photographs with softened corners,
handwritten letters folded into envelopes,
poems hiding inside forgotten diaries,
and the smell of books opened once again.

Children laughing in another room,
messages arriving from far away,
a familiar voice saying my name,
and the relief of knowing someone is safe.

Rain striking dry Canarian soil,
thunder rolling over mountains,
the sharp scent rising from the earth
before the storm has finished speaking.

Long drives without a destination,
roads revealing villages,
cliffs,
and sea;
finding beauty where no guidebook pointed,
and returning home with dust on the car.

Candles burning beside crystals,
cards spread beneath quiet hands,
a drumbeat answering something ancient,
and dreams that refuse to be forgotten.

The moment a melody becomes a song,
the moment a blank page begins to breathe,
the moment grief loosens its grip
because words have finally given it a name.

All these have been my loves.

I so enjoyed your small constellations, Maggie, many of which resonate with me, especially: ‘bare feet pressed against cool tiles, then warmer earth beneath the morning sun’ and ‘music turning pain into somewhere I can breathe’.  You’re another poet who loves ‘fresh sheets smoothed across a tired bed’ – that makes three of us! These lines really spoke to me:
    ‘Old photographs with softened corners,
    handwritten letters folded into envelopes,
    poems hiding inside forgotten diaries,
and the smell of books opened once again’.

Awwww. I was pulled in from the coffee already because that’s exactly how I feel, not human until I have had some, and the headphones and the photographs and all. Oh. Loved your list very much. These are exactly the things that make life enjoyable.
