Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge – Stop
STOP

The Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge word is STOP.
When I saw the prompt, my mind immediately travelled to a stop sign in Gran Canaria that made me laugh every time I passed it.
At first glance, it looked perfectly ordinary. A red STOP sign stood beneath another sign that read:
“GRACIAS POR SU VISITA”
Underneath was the English translation:
“THANK YOU FOR HIS VISIT”
His visit?
Whose visit?
Nobody seemed to know.
For years, that sign became something of a local celebrity. Tourists stopped to photograph it, chuckle at it, and wonder about the mysterious gentleman whose visit had apparently been so important.
Every time I saw it, I smiled.
Perhaps that is why the word STOP doesn’t always mean what we think it means.
Sometimes it means stop the car.
Sometimes it means stop rushing.
And sometimes it means stop long enough to appreciate life’s little imperfections.
The funny translation was technically wrong, but it brought joy to countless people. It became part of the journey, part of the memory, part of the story.
The last time I visited Gran Canaria, I discovered the sign had been corrected.
The grammar was perfect.
The mystery was gone.
No more wondering who “he” was.
No more laughing every time I drove past.
I suppose that is progress.
But I have to admit, I miss the old sign.
It reminded me that life doesn’t have to be perfect to make us smile.
Sometimes the mistakes become the memories we treasure most.
And that is why, whenever I think of the word STOP, I think of a sign in Gran Canaria that accidentally thanked us for his visit.
Whoever he was, I hope he knows he became a legend.
