The Getaway Driver

Nobody asked me if I had a license.

One minute I was guarding the yard, minding my business, the next—

“Stay in the truck,” my human said. “I’ll be right back.”

Right back?

That was twenty-three tail wags ago.

Now here I sat in the driver’s seat, trying to look responsible while suspicious humans walked past pretending not to notice. One lady even took a photo. Rude.

Truth was, my master had gone to negotiate with my ex.

Custody discussions.

I missed my puppies. Every squeaky bark. Every muddy pawprint.

The plan had been simple:

If negotiations failed…we’d go full getaway mode.

I placed one paw on the steering wheel.

Just in case.

Besides—I had watched my human drive enough times.

How hard could it be?
