This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
As Vincent took in the view from the seventeenth floor of the hotel, the lights suddenly went out all over the city.

The Seventeenth Floor
As Vincent took in the view from the seventeenth floor of the hotel, the lights suddenly went out all over the city.
Darkness swallowed everything.
The towers vanished.
The streets below dissolved into shadow.
Even the moon seemed to retreat behind thick clouds, as though the night itself had drawn a curtain.
“Perfect timing,” Vincent muttered.
The conference downstairs had drained him. A delayed flight, bad coffee, too many strangers asking the same empty questions. He had only come to the window for a moment of quiet.
Then he noticed something strange.
The city was black.
But the hotel across the river glowed warmly, every room alive with amber light.
And yet…
their hotel alone stood dark.
Every floor.
Every window.
A cold ripple ran through him.
His phone showed 11:17 PM.
No signal.
No internet.
No emergency lights.
Nothing.
Then came the sound.
A faint ding.
The elevator.
Vincent turned.
At the far end of the corridor outside his room, the lift doors slowly slid open.
No light inside.
Just darkness.
He waited.
No one stepped out.
The hallway remained still.
Then—
Tap.
A soft sound outside his door.
Like wet shoes against carpet.
Tap.
Tap.
Vincent frowned and looked through the peephole.
Nothing.
Only the endless corridor.
Except—
water.
A thin trail of dark water stretched across the carpet, glistening beneath the emergency exit sign.
Leading toward room 1717.
His room.
His breath caught.
The receptionist’s strange words suddenly echoed in his head from earlier that evening:
“We don’t usually book this floor.”
He had laughed at the time.
“Why?”
She hesitated.
Then smiled too quickly.
“Old plumbing.”
Another sound.
Closer now.
Tap.
Tap.
Like soaked footsteps stopping directly outside his door.
And then—
A woman’s voice.
Soft.
Broken.
Almost a whisper.
“Please…”
A long pause.
Then:
“Have you seen my little boy?”
Vincent stepped back so quickly he nearly tripped.
The air temperature dropped.
His breath turned white.
And slowly…
beneath the crack of the hotel door—
water began to seep into the room.
Not clean water.
Dark.
Salt-smelling.
As though the sea itself had climbed seventeen floors to find him.
Then the room phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Hands shaking, Vincent answered.
Only static.
Then an old man’s voice, trembling:
“Sir… if you’re on seventeen…”
A pause.
Heavy breathing.
“Do not open the door.”
Outside—
three slow knocks echoed through the room.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
And a child’s voice whispered through the wood—
“Mama says you let us in last time.”
