The Reaction Between Them

Her kiss reminded him of chemistry lessons in school, when, if the right two elements were mixed together, they’d explode.

Not instantly.

That was the misunderstanding people had about explosions. The real danger was often in the build-up — the invisible tension before ignition. The slow rise in temperature. The feeling that something irreversible had already begun long before anyone noticed the smoke.

That was how it had been with her.

It started quietly.

Shared glances stretched a little too long. Conversations that drifted past midnight without either of them realizing time had moved. The strange comfort of being understood without needing to explain every unfinished thought.

He should have recognized the warning signs..

But chemistry rarely feels dangerous at first.

It feels magnetic.

The kiss itself lasted only seconds.

Yet somehow it rearranged the atmosphere around them. The room felt altered afterward, charged with something neither of them could put back where it belonged.

She pulled away first.

Not dramatically. Not guiltily.

Just enough to breathe.

His heart was still trying to recover when she smiled — small, knowing, almost sad.

“That,” she whispered, “was a terrible idea.”

Maybe it was.

Because some connections don’t arrive gently into your life.

And from that moment on, everything ordinary between them was gone. Every touch carried awareness. Every silence held heat. Even distance became combustible.

People talk about sparks as though they’re romantic.

What they forget is this:

A spark is simply proof that something is already burning.
