The Room That Echoed Back
He liked the room.
Everything inside it agreed with him.
The books confirmed what he already believed.
The voices he listened to echoed his own thoughts,
refined, repeated, returned.
There was comfort in that.
No friction.
No interruption.
No unsettling pause where something unfamiliar
might ask to be understood.
Outside,
people spoke differently.
They questioned, contradicted,
held truths that did not fit neatly into his.
He called it confusion.
Inside the room,
there was clarity.
Or so it seemed.
At first,
the echoes felt like certainty—
a steady rhythm of yes, yes, yes
answering every thought before it was fully formed.
But over time, something shifted.
The room grew smaller.
The air felt thinner,
as if each repeated idea consumed
a little more space
than it returned.
He spoke
aloud one day—
a question,
just to hear it.
The answer came back instantly.
Too instantly.
Not shaped.
Not challenged.
Not alive.
Just…
his own voice
wearing a different tone.
He paused.
For the first time,
the silence between echoes
felt louder than the echoes themselves.
He looked toward the door.
It had always been there.
Unopened.
Unnecessary.
Until now.
He stood there for a long time,
hand hovering,
uncertain which was more frightening—
the world beyond the door,
or the quiet realization
that he had never truly left himself.
