What We Unearth

I dig where memory resists,
where the ground feels harder than it should.

Some truths do not rise easily—
they wait beneath silence,
beneath stories
told too quickly.

Still, I keep digging,
not for answers alone,
but for what refuses
to stay buried
in the dark.

Well said, Maggie. We have a thirst to know, don’t we, especially, “for what refuses
    to stay buried.”

Let sleeping dogs lie? Sometimes that can be just as hard.

Awesome work, M. Oh, if only we could control what does and doesNOT submit to (and remain) buried…

insightful ‘dig’ response… some things just bubble to the surface in the oddest of times…. and those that stay buried… ‘where the ground feels harder than it should’ now that’s a thought i’ll have to dig in for the answer…. reflecting on the ground that doesn’t give way while i’m gardening…. digging it up, loosening the ground…. let some air in… lots of great deep thought-provoking words that cause a reaction in this girl…..

I think it’s important to get to the truth, too, Maggie–sometimes the digging has to go very deep.

We were watching an episode of “Finding Your Roots” last night. It’s interesting sometimes the family stories that get told through generations that aren’t true.
