My grandfather once said to me, when I was a child,
“If you had been a boy, you would have become a priest.”
This was long before women were allowed to stand at the altar.
My grandmother had bought me a children’s book—
365 Stories from the Bible.
Every night she would read one story before I fell asleep.
Every Sunday meant Sunday school.
At school I knew my Bible well.
I was the star pupil when it came to scripture.
But somewhere along the way, something changed.
There were things I could not forgive God for.
Things that prayers did not stop.
Things that no miracle came to save.
At first I prayed and prayed.
Then I stopped.
Once I learned to read on my own,
I spent my time in the attic
with books like Nancy Drew—
my escape from both the bad things
and from God.
Yet even now, I still know my Bible.
And one teaching has never left me:
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
I learned it in Norwegian first.
But its meaning travels well.
