Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

I’ve taken on many DIY projects in my life. Sewing. Decorating. Building little creative corners in our home.

But the most ambitious one?

The darkroom my father and I built when I was fourteen.

It started at school. I chose optional classes — two hours of photography every week, and two hours of typewriting.

Four hours that quietly shaped my future.

In photography class, I fell in love with the magic of the darkroom. The red light. The trays. The stillness. Watching an image slowly appear in chemical baths felt like witnessing something sacred.

In typewriting, I learned rhythm. Precision. The steady music of keys striking paper. Words forming with intention.

Light and language.

For my communion money, I didn’t buy jewelry or fashionable clothes. I bought darkroom equipment. But equipment needs a space — and a darkroom must be truly dark. No light leaks. No careless cracks. One thin line of light could ruin everything.

So we built one.

It was the first time I remember explaining something technical and being taken seriously. I told my father how it needed to be — how the door must seal, how edges must be covered, how the light could not sneak in from anywhere.

And he listened.

He didn’t dismiss it as a phase. He didn’t take over. He collaborated.

We measured. Sealed. Tested for light leaks. Adjusted again.

And eventually, we created a room where images could develop safely in darkness.

Looking back, I realize it wasn’t just about photography.

It was about trust.
About being heard.
About building something that protects creativity.

In darkness, images develop.
In silence, words form.

Those school hours — photography and typewriting — were never random.

They were the beginning of everything.

And in many ways, I’m still developing photographs and stories — just in different forms.
