Wrong Number

I was about sixteen when I unintentionally created a small media storm.
We shared a house with my grandparents, and the only phone in the house was their landline.

I had written an explosive article for the local newspaper about racism and what it felt like to carry the “foreigner” mark for years.
The climate at the time was heated, with voices growing louder about who did and didn’t belong in Norway.
Only my mother knew I had written it.

When the article was published, the phone started ringing nonstop.
My grandfather, who had once been mayor and was a respected teacher, was furious — not necessarily because of what I wrote, but because I hadn’t consulted him first.
“You created this,” he said sharply, handing me the receiver. “Now you take the calls.”

So I did.
Over and over, I picked up and told callers they had the wrong number before hanging up.
It was my way of surviving the noise.

Then one call came where I began my usual line, ready to disconnect.
“Maggie,” the voice said calmly, “it’s the priest.”

I froze.

Instead of anger, he laughed gently and said he only wanted to congratulate me.
I asked him, stunned, “You’re not angry like the others?”
“No,” he said. “But remember, the pen is a mighty sword. Use it wisely. And consult someone before sending in more articles.”

The following week, he wrote a long piece himself, asking why adults were attacking a young girl for using her voice.

I never wrote for that local newspaper again.
But I never forgot the lesson.

Sometimes the call you think is another wrong number is the one that steadies your hand.

It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. I created a storm i wasn’t prepared for. And thinking back, I realise it was also the fear that made me stop writing some months later. Just normal school essays after.

I think it could have been handled better as you were only a school girl at the time.
