When the Night Remembers

For dVerse Meet the Bar — Verbing Your Verse, hosted by Björn Rudberg

The evening silvers the volcanic hills,
while shadows gather where the daylight ends.
The Atlantic thunders against the shore,
carrying secrets the darkness never tells.

Above me, stars scatter across the heavens,
and the moon lays silver upon the stones.
A distant owl breaks the silence,
its lonely call travelling through the night.

Somewhere between the sea and sky,
my childhood autumns into memory—
golden birches, frost upon the windows,
and the scent of woodsmoke in Norwegian air.

The years have carried me across oceans,
yet certain moments refuse to disappear.
They settle quietly within the heart,
waiting for a familiar sound to wake them.

And when the night mirrors yesterday,
I hear the echoes of a thousand stories,
the voices of those who walked before me,
and the songs I have yet to write.

For time may winter our bodies,
and distance may separate our shores,
but memory keeps its own seasons,
and love refuses to grow old.

A delightful poem that appeals to the senses, Maggie! I especially love the verbification in ‘my childhood autumns into memory’ and ‘time may winter our bodies’.

Thank you so much, Kim! 💜 Those two lines are particularly close to my heart. Growing up in Norway, autumn was such a colourful season, and even after all these years living in the Canary Islands, those memories remain vivid.

I loved the challenge of letting the seasons become verbs, especially the thought that time may winter our bodies while our memories and love continue to bloom.

I’m delighted those lines resonated with you. Thank you for your lovely words!

Yes, seasons are perfect as verbs, and make them very strong metaphors.

Thank you so much, Björn! 💜 I loved exploring how the seasons could become actions rather than simply descriptions. Living between memories of Norwegian autumns and the very different seasons here in the Canary Islands, those metaphors felt especially natural to me.

I particularly enjoyed the idea that time can winter our bodies while memories and love continue to flourish.

Thank you for another inspiring challenge!
