This week’s Story Starter teaser is:

Fandango’s Story Starter #270

The Last Performance

Fandango’s Story Starter — 27 October 2026

A single white glove with what appeared to be several drops of blood on it lay on the ground almost covered by dead leaves.

Detective Eleanor Hayes crouched beside it.

The glove was small, delicate, and embroidered with tiny pearls around the wrist.

It reminded her of something.

Something she hadn’t thought about in twenty-seven years.

The disappearance of ballerina Isabelle Moreau.

Isabelle had vanished on Halloween night in 1999, minutes before the final performance of Swan Lake at the old Grand Theatre.

Her dressing room had been found empty.

Her costume lay across a chair.

And on the mirror, written in red lipstick, were five words.

THE FINAL ACT IS MINE.

No body had ever been found.

Eleanor had been a young police officer then, working her first major investigation.

Now, just three days before Halloween, the theatre was reopening after decades of abandonment.

And someone had left a glove in the woods behind it.

“Bag it,” she instructed the forensic technician.

As she stood, something caught her eye.

A narrow trail through the leaves.

Footprints.

Small ones.

Barefoot.

Leading towards the theatre.

Inside, the building smelled of dust, damp velvet, and forgotten memories.

The stage was illuminated by a single spotlight.

And beneath it stood a music box.

Eleanor recognised it immediately.

Isabelle’s music box.

It had disappeared from the evidence room in 2001.

She approached cautiously.

The lid was open.

A tiny porcelain ballerina turned slowly while the familiar melody of Swan Lake echoed through the empty auditorium.

Beside it lay a photograph.

Five young women in white ballet costumes.

Isabelle stood in the centre.

Eleanor recognised the others.

Three had died over the past twenty-seven years.

One in a house fire.

One in a car accident.

One from an apparent suicide.

The fifth woman was still alive.

Margaret Vale.

The theatre’s former director.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

FOUR HAVE TAKEN THEIR FINAL BOW.

Eleanor felt a chill.

There were five women in the photograph.

But only three were known to be dead.

She took out her phone and called Margaret.

No answer.

Then, from somewhere above the stage, came the sound of applause.

Slow.

Deliberate.

One pair of hands.

Eleanor looked up.

A woman stood in the balcony.

She wore a white ballet dress.

Her face was hidden behind a porcelain mask.

“Isabelle?” Eleanor whispered.

The woman tilted her head.

Then she disappeared into the darkness.

Police searched the theatre.

They found no woman.

No mask.

No sign of anyone entering or leaving.

But backstage, behind a wall that had recently been disturbed, they discovered a narrow passage leading beneath the building.

At the bottom stood a locked wooden door.

Eleanor ordered it opened.

Inside was a small room.

A bed.

A wardrobe.

A table.

And hundreds of photographs.

All of Isabelle.

Some showed her as a young woman.

Others had been taken recently.

Eleanor stared at a photograph dated September 2026.

Isabelle was alive.

Older, thinner, but unmistakably alive.

Then Eleanor noticed the handwriting beneath it.

She never left.

A voice spoke behind her.

“No, Detective. She didn’t.”

Eleanor turned.

Margaret Vale stood in the doorway.

She was holding a pistol.

“Twenty-seven years,” Eleanor whispered. “You kept her here for twenty-seven years?”

Margaret smiled.

“Isabelle was going to ruin everything. She discovered what happened to the theatre’s money. She threatened to tell the police.”

“So you imprisoned her?”

“She was supposed to stay quiet until I could fix things.”

“And the other dancers?”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“They asked too many questions.”

Eleanor slowly raised her hands.

“Where is Isabelle now?”

Margaret laughed.

“Dead, I imagine. She escaped three nights ago. She was weak. She couldn’t have gone far.”

Eleanor thought of the bloody glove.

The barefoot footprints.

The woman on the balcony.

Then the music began.

Swan Lake.

Margaret froze.

“That’s impossible.”

From the passage came a soft voice.

“Did you miss me, Margaret?”

Isabelle stepped into the doorway.

She wore the same white ballet dress.

In her hand was a second glove.

Its pearl embroidery matched the one found in the woods.

Margaret raised her pistol.

But Eleanor was faster.

The shot struck the ceiling.

Within seconds, officers rushed into the room and restrained Margaret.

Isabelle stood trembling.

Eleanor approached her gently.

“It’s over now.”

Isabelle shook her head.

“No, Detective.”

She looked towards Margaret.

“Not quite.”

From her dress, she produced a small recording device.

A red light blinked.

“Now it’s over.”

On Halloween night, the Grand Theatre opened its doors for the first time in twenty-seven years.

The audience filled every seat.

There were no elaborate decorations.

No orchestra.

Only a single spotlight illuminating the stage.

Isabelle Moreau walked into the light.

Her movements were slower now.

Her body carried the scars of captivity.

But when the first notes of Swan Lake began, she lifted her arms.

And danced.

Not for Margaret.

Not for the critics.

Not even for the audience.

For the twenty-seven years stolen from her.

When the music ended, the theatre erupted in applause.

Isabelle bowed.

Then she removed her white gloves and placed them gently at the centre of the stage.

For the first time in her life, she no longer needed to play the part someone else had written for her.

The final act was hers.

The End.
